Barcelona defeated Villarreal
4-1 today in a match at the Camp Nou that was not nearly as one-sided
as the score suggested. However, the diffrence in class in the final
third was telling—Neymar, Messi and Suarez all scored, though Messi’s
two goals came through a deflection and a penalty that never should have
been given. Cedric Bakambu scored Villarreal’s only goal.
Rodri and Trigueros worked hard in midfield and maybe things would have been different if Roberto Soldado
had directed his header on target with five minutes left in the first
half and the score 1-1. It didn’t happen, and Messi’s deflection on the
stroke of halftime gave Barca alead they never relinquished.
Unfortunately our back line, without Victor Ruiz, struggled to contain Barcelona’s movement, and it has to be said neither Jaume Costa nor Mario Gaspar
had their best games, and I am sure Andrés will feel he should have
stopped Suarez’s shot from a tight angle for their third goal.
As I said going in, you need some help from a Barca side
not playing at their best, some luck, and a referee who doesn’t give all
the marginal calls to the opposition, and we didn’t have any of those
things today.
So now we wait to see how the Basque derby plays out:
Alaves-Bilbao. We could remain in fifth, or we could drop to sixth. At
least we didn’t lose anyone to suspension today. Next Sunday, a MUST
WIN match versus Depor at home. ENDAVANT!
