Gomes joined Barcelona last summer for £41.7m from Valencia, rejecting interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid but he struggled to establish himself in his first season at the Nou Camp.
The 23-year-old arrived after impressing at the European Championships but he made just 17 league starts as he was mainly used as a deputy for Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic.
Paris Saint Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has being strongly linked with Barcelona meaning Gomes faces the prospect of even less minutes for Barcelona next season.
But the report says United have not ended their interest in him and are waiting to see whether Barcelona decide to keep Gomes.
Serie A champions Juventus are also credited with an interest in the midfielder, who is currently at the Confederations Cup with Portugal.
United's chances of landing Gomes could be aided by agent Jorge Mendes being his representative.
Mendes' clients include United boss Jose Mourinho, David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo.
